At least three persons have been killed in police firing and nearly 60 people were injured including several cops in clashes that broke out in Bengaluru over an alleged derogatory social media post about Prophet Muhammed. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed in Bengaluru while curfew has been imposed in DJ Halli and KG Halli police station limits.
An irked mob gathered in front of the residence of a Congress MLA Srinivas Murthy in northeast Bengaluru late Tuesday in protest against an alleged Facebook post by the MLA’s relatives. They pelted stones and set ablaze some vehicles, leading to violence. As cops rushed to spot, scores gathered and marched to DJ Halli police station demanding an FIR and immediate arrest of the alleged perpetrator Naveen.
The police used lathi-charge, tear gas and firing to disperse the violent crowd. 110 people have been arrested for violence, stone-throwing and assault on police personnel.
“Two people died in police firing, one injured shifted to a hospital. Around 60 police personnel including an Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) have been injured in the clashes,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said earlier. Third died later.
“Section 144 of CrPC to prohibit the assembly of four or more persons in an area has been imposed in Bengaluru and curfew has been imposed in DJ Halli and KG Halli police station limits of the city,” the officer further stated.
The cops further stated that the issue will be probed but vandalism is not the solution. Additional forces have been deployed and action will be taken against miscreants.
