A Star is Born, the bookie’s favorite, probably is the weakest Oscar favorite in a long long time. The Star Is Born is a strange choice for a debut directorial venture. Bradley Cooper , the director and star of the movie, it seems chose a safe vehicle. If there is one thing he did right in his efforts, it would be eliciting a worthy acting performance from Lady Gaga.
Cooper has also done a fantastic job of showing song presentations. Shot live during real music events, the onstage experience is there for all to not just see but also feel. One feels they are at a concert watching it live. The ending of the movie is absolutely bad. In times when women have stood up and proved themselves by their own effort and talent, A Star Is Born degrades that showing the female lead attains fame mostly because of the death of the male lead. The female character throughout the movie is defined by the male character.
In a year defined by cinematic mediocrity, A Star is Born might take the Oscar for best motion picture home, only because it is better than the rest and the award has to be given to someone.
Vice has probably the strongest acting ensemble this year. Christian Bale and Amy Adams giving outstanding performances. And All the supporting cast including Steve Carrell, Tyler Perry, Last year’s best supporting actor Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, all give sensational performances.
The black comedy directed by Adam Mckay holds the audience interest throughout the two hours. Vice has been divisive within both the critics and the viewers. Some will applaud this Dick Cheney. And some will hate him. But no one will fault Bale’s performance. But it does have a lot going for it. Picking up acting awards in other awards including the Golden Globes & the Critics awards already has uplifted the chances of Vice getting a best picture nomination nod.
If Beale Street Could Talk is a love story set in Harlem. Barry Jenkins , Director of Moonlight has this time adapted a James Baldwin novel. The film deals with love and loss. Fonny is falsely implicated in a rape case and imprisoned. The film deals with their love and how his pregnant fiancée fights to get him freed. If Beale Street Could Talk stars Kiki Lane and Stephen James and Regina King. Set in the 60s, the movie is shot in vibrant colours and the cinematography is exemplary. The movie shows Harlem in its most beautiful state and makes one want to fall in love, pain and all.
Regina King is the stand out factor of the movie. There are times when she makes the whole movie hers. If Beale Street Could Talk celebrates love. It is very evident the director has taken care of his characters lovingly as the movie seems to be caressing them.
Spike Lee is this time contesting with BLackKKKlansman, a true story about a black detective who infiltrated the KKK.
The movie is set in the 70s. But BlackKKKlansman is the 2018 oscar contender that is most reflective of Today’s political climate in America. Spike Lee uses the movie to all but say a KKKlansman is running the country. He shows that what had happened decades ago during white supremacist movements, still exists today.
Spike Lee uses his usual satirical style to tell the story. The movie has enjoyed wide support critics and fans alike. The stars John Davis Washington and Adam Driver has been applauded for their performances.
With so many movies of his contesting for the academies throughout the years, it is astonishing that Spike Lee has never been nominated for a Best Director Oscar. This year that might all change.
A father dealing with his son’s drug abuse is the premise of a Beautiful Boy. The movie based on the memoirs of David and Nic Sheff, portrayed by Steve Carrell and Timothee Chalamet is a story the scion of a well to do California family trying to kick his drug addiction. The family drama shows how the family deals with the crisis over several years as the son goes into relapses and recovery.
It is a familiar story throughout the world where the family is shocked by how their beautiful boy had grown up to be someone they hardly understand. The family realizes their years of sacrifice has been for nothing. But finally they come triumphant with nothing but familial love saving them.
Timothee Chalamet is on a different level showcasing his talent after an amazing show last year in Call Me By Your Name. Steve Carell is as far away from his comedic roles as possible. But could good acting alone ensure a nod at best picture nomination?
A Quiet Place. A really well crafted movie falling in the Horror/fantasy Genre is wholly set in a universe that is the brain child of the director and star of the movie, John Krasinsky. The movie is set in a world inhabited by monsters whose acute hearing entails that survivors live in absolute silence so as not to be found out.
The movie was a financial and critical success. Krasinsky has proven that technical finesse, great acting and artistic superiority you usually associate with award movie can be applied in horror movies. Emily Blunt is the stand out performer here as she is in all her movies.
And the award goes to…………………………
