Ahead of Ramzan, on Wednesday, a Christian Keralite businessman hailing from Kayamkulam has gifted a $3 lakh mosque to those hundreds of Muslim workers in the UAE.
Saji Cheriyan, 49 built the mosque for those workers living in a workers accommodation that he rented out to 53 companies in Fujairah.
Mariam,Umm Eisa meaning Mary, the Moher of Jesus will be the name of the mosque.
Cheriyan explained that his decision to build a mosque came when he witnessed workers rushing to take taxi in order to go to nearest mosque.
The businessman landed in UAE in order to survive with just a few hundred dirhams. At a time, the newly built mosque in the East Ville Real Estate Complex in AL Hayl Industrial Area can accommodate 250 worshippers.
Cheriyan said, “Officials were surprised and happy when they got to know I am a Christian who wishes to build a mosque. They offered me all support and were ready to offer free electricity and water and other facilities.”However, what he accepted from as their offer included a carpet and a sound system for the mosque.
He added,” when word spread about my mosque, many offered help. But I have politefuly refused since I wanted to build the mosque on my own.”
In 2017, a mosque was renamed as Mariam, Umm Eisa and this encouraged him to opt it as the name for his mosque. Cheriyan already built a church for his parish in Dibba.
