Thiruvananthapuram: On Tuesday, Kerala will submit the report opposing the EIA draft notification 2020. The state government has taken a stand to oppose the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) draft notification 2020 which is intended to replace the Existing EIA notification by the Centre, over the centralized power system forwarded in the provisions of the draft notification. The new draft notification will subvert the power assumed by the states and local governing bodies. The CPI(M) central leadership also came forward by expressing dissent over the new EIA draft notification earlier.
Currently, an Environment Impact Assessment is mandatory for any structure below 20,000 sqft The state set to oppose the decision of the central government to increase the limit from 20,000sqf to one lakh sqft, reports Manorma news.
The deadline to submit an opinion over EIA draft notification 2020 for the state government will expire today. The EIA draft notification by relaxing the laws stipulated for the environment protection sparked protests across the nation and triggered widescale discussions. So far, the state government did not have given an opinion over the matter. The alleged passive stand taken by the state government triggered strong protests from the opposition parties.
The opposition Congress has raised allegation against the incumbent LDF government that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan are enemies to the environment and that is why the state government did not take a stand over the matter so far.
