The Delhi High Court has fixed August 11 as the deadline for the public to comment on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Many of us have already noticed anti-EIA posts on new media including Twitter Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.
Environment Impact Assessment in India
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MEF), Government of India, under the Environmental (Protection) Act 1986, on January 27, 1994, promulgated an EIA announcement.
The government made Environmental Clearance (EC) obligatory for development or modernisation of any activity or for setting up new projects specified in Schedule 1 of the Act.
On September 2006, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change stated EIA Act which makes it compulsory for various projects such as mining, thermal power plants, river valley projects, infrastructure like road, highway, ports and airports and various industries to acquire environment authorisation.
In the New Draft
EIA 2020 has added a new category called B2. It covers more than forty projects. None of these projects demands clearance. Even if an existing company doubles its operations by 50 per cent, clearance from the Ministry of Environment is not required. How much damage the company does, no rules matter.
At present, all buildings with an area of 20,000 square feet or above are obliged to apply for environmental clearance.
According to EIA 2020, only a building of more than 1,50,000 square feet is needed to procure this permit. This means, no one will be able to complain about the environmental damage caused by any project or the threat caused by those to human life living nearby.
The limit for metal processing units has been raised from 30,000 tonnes to one lakh tonnes. Highway less than 70 meters wide does not need permission. EIA has not required for the approval for mining up to 5 acres.
If the environmental permit is not issued within 15 days of application, the permit will be deemed to have been conferred.
Reaction via Social Media handles
Many personalities slammed against the Environmental Impact Assessment draft, 2020 through social media handles and even by signing petitions.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that the objective of the EIA draft 2020 draft is a loot of the nation which is an example of the BJP government has been doing for the ‘friends’ of the suit-boot who have robbed the resources of the country. He urged the government to eliminate the draft which causes environmental destruction.
The objective of the draft EIA2020 is clear – #LootOfTheNation This is another terrible example of what the BJP government has been doing for the ‘friends’ of the suit-boot who have robbed the resources of the country. EIA 2020 draft must be withdrawn to stop #LootOfTheNation and environmental destruction.

Give free reign to polluting industries like coal mining
Silence communities which will be directly affected by the environmental fallout
BJP is out to destroy our environment!#LootOfTheNation

Initiative We Can Take
This is not only something that affects us. It is an amendment that will destroy future generations wholly. So far the EIA has not become law. Only the draft is ready. Concerns and protests against this amendment can be reported until August 11.
