New Delhi: On Wednesday, in an unprecedented move the election commission invoked article 324 of the constitution to cut the election campaigning in West Bengal one day prior to the scheduled date.
The election commission removed two high profiled officials in the state-Atri Bhattacharya, the Principle secretary and CID Rajeev Kumar, Additional Director General – with immediate effect.
Issuing the order to invoke article 324 Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Deputy Election Commissioner said at a press conference held at here that EC is invoking article 324 for the first time in the history. But the poll body noted to opinionate “ it may not be the last in cases of repetition of lawlessness and violence , which vitiate the conduct of polls in a peaceful manner”
The ban comes over 9 constituencies, Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jayanagar, Mathurapur, Jadavpur, Diamond Harbour and North and South Kolkata.
The spat between BJP and Trinamool Congress ended in violence after the workers of both parties clashed at road show held by BJP president Amit Shah at Kolkata on Tuesday evening. Major Law and order crisis was erupted in the state after the activists of ABVP and TMCC combated each other at College Street.
A statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the reformist and philosopher in Bengal was smashed in the clash between ABVP and TMCC supporters at Vidyasagar College at Shankar Gosh Lane. The two parties are reportedly accusing each other over vandalizing the statue and seeking vote over the untoward incident.
The EC specially noticed and expressed deep “anguish” over damaging the status of Vidyasagar and conveyed hope that “vandals are traced by the state administration”.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banergee accused Election Commission to have provided favor to BJP and she said the EC’s move,” unprecedented and unconstitutional and unethical gift to P M Modi and Amit Shah by the poll panel”.
Mamata said she would not have witnessed such a violence in election ever before and Bengal would not ‘spare’ those who were acted behind. Amit Shah accused Mamata over ‘destroying the statue of Vidyasagar, the reformist and philosopher for votes. With in no time after the violence, the TMC leaders changed twitter profile pictures to that of Vidyasagar.
