Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Fani is ravaging in Odisha with a speed of 200 kmph and six people including an elderly woman and a boy were reportedly killed. Several houses are reported to have either dilapidated or submerged in heavy rain due to the cyclonic wind. Several districts including the state capital Bhubaneswar is affected by Fani with severe devastation. Mobile towers are damaged and power supply is disconnected in several areas including the state capital.
In nation’s largest rescue operation, 10,000 villages and 52 urban areas were evacuated 2 days prior to the cyclonic storm to affect the state. The evacuees were accommodated in 4,000 shelters and 880 specially designed cyclonic shelters were set up.
After Odisha cyclone Fani is likely to be turning towards West Bengal and the state is alerted to incur the wrath of Fani. Chief minister Mamata Banergee cancelled election rallies scheduled for next 48 hours to monitor the situation. Heavy rain started in Bengal since Friday morning and traffic snarls are reported from many parts in the state including Kolkata. The airline services will be closed down from 3pm Friday to 8pm Saturday at Kolkata and at Bhubaneswar airports. The wind speed is likely to be fragile and reduced to 150 – 100 at reaching in Bengal. More than 220 trains in Kolkata –Chennai route are cancelled, as per reports.
