Thiruvananthapuram: On Wednesday, a cartoon won lalithakala academy award sparked controversy when provoked protests from Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council (KCBC). The cartoon caricaturing Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the accused in nun rape case, triggered protest from( KCBC). The religious body protested against the cartoon over tarnishing Christan religious symbols. Bishop Franco Mulakkal belonged to the Jalandhar diocese, was removed from the diocese after the rape allegation raised against him by a nun.
AK Balan, the minister and senior party leader CPI (M) asked the academy to review its decision and said that it has no intent to hurt religious sentiments. Ramesh Chennithala, leader of opposition flayed the controversial cartoon and said that marring beliefs in the name of freedom of expression should not be allowed.
Cartoonist K K Subhash said that the caricature has already come in a Malayalam publication and no protest was raised over the cartoon then. He said every body accepted the cartoon and enjoyed the satire in it.
