Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak found guilty of corruption and was sentenced to 12 years of jail term. The trail was for the first time over a multi-billion dollar , 1MDB (1Malyasia Development Berhad) fianancial scandal.
High court judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali sentenced Najib Razak to 12 years jail term along with a fine amount of 210 million Malaysian ringgit ($49.40 million) on a charge of misuse of power and authority.
As the reports of Reuters states, “Prosecutors say more than $1 billion of 1MDB funds made its way into Najib’s personal accounts, and over which he faces a total of 42 criminal charges. Prosecutors have also said $27 million was used to buy a pink diamond necklace for Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, and some of the money went into war chests for Najib’s election campaigns.
Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali said, “After considering all evidence in this trial, I find that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond a resonable doubt”.
